Labor Day Holiday One of the Deadliest Weekends for Drunk Driving

HARRISBURG, PA - It's time to hit the road for the last summer holiday weekend and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and Sheetz, Inc. are sending a lifesaving reminder to drive safe, drive sober and buckle up! MADD and Sheetz want everyone to enjoy the Labor Day celebrations and to also Designate A Driver if alcohol is part of your celebration.

Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show Labor Day weekend as a very deadly holiday for alcohol-related traffic deaths.

MADD's Designate a Driver campaign raises awareness about the dangers of drunk driving, reminds motorists to designate a non-drinking driver before the celebrations begin, and provides free Safe Party Guides for hosts. The guides are available online or from your local MADD coordinator.

"Drinking and driving don't mix," said Rebecca Shaver, Regional Executive Director for MADD in Pennsylvania. "Designating a sober driver is a labor of love this holiday weekend. Everyone can help keep the roadways, waterways and loved ones safe by making a simple decision to drive safe and sober."

Sheetz, Inc., a Pennsylvania based convenience store chain, is teaming up with MADD by working to increase public awareness over the Labor Day Weekend. On Saturday, September 1st, Sheetz, Inc. will be donating 10 cents for every cup of coffee sold at all 338 Sheetz locations to support MADD's life-saving efforts in Pennsylvania, Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia. Sheetz, Inc. will also be displaying posters to remind motorists to drive safely and sober. "We are a company rooted in our communities, and we are pleased to have the opportunity to partner with MADD again in 2007," said Louie Sheetz, Executive Vice President of Marketing, Sheetz, Inc. "This year we will not only be displaying posters in support of MADD's mission in our Pennsylvania stores, but also in the other five states where Sheetz, Inc. operates." This is the 7th year in a row that Sheetz, Inc. has been the exclusive corporate sponsor of MADD's Labor Day Weekend campaign.

MADD urges hosts to be responsible by offering a variety of non-alcoholic beverages for designated drivers, never serving alcohol to those under the legal drinking age of 21, asking guests to appoint a designated driver before the evening begins, not letting guests mix their own drinks, and never allowing guests who have had too much to drink to drive home.

Founded in 1980, MADD is the premiere organization working to fight drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking. MADD is a 501(c) 3 charity with approximately 2 million members nationwide. For more information about MADD visit MADD's web site at www.maddpa.org.
