A new coalition of health and safety leaders committed to preserving the 21 Minimum Legal
Drinking Age (MLDA) as a lifesaving tool will be announced at a press conference on Tuesday,
October 9, 2007. MADD will be joined by the American Medical Association, National Transportation
Safety Board and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety to highlight more than 50 high-quality
studies that found conclusively that the 21 MLDA decreases alcohol-related fatalities up
to 16 percent among those ages 18 to 20. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
(NHTSA) estimates nearly 1,000 lives are saved each year because of MLDA.
